Thoughts, Views and Opinions? Should the Lakeland Terrier be euthanized? Owner Creates Shrine To Dog Who Met Tragic Death Posted: Jul 30, 2014 5:10 PM PDT Updated: Jul 30, 2014 5:12 PM PDT GERMANTOWN, .(WHBQ)- It is the case of a Germantown, Tennessee home invasion that ended in a fatal tragedy. But, the victim and the alleged perpetrator arent exactly who you might expect. Two Germantown families are at odds over the viscous and strange death of a family pet. The tragedy has led to a unique outpouring of sympathy from the neighborhood and the creation of a make-shift shrine to the victim. The whole incident has restored one womans faith in the goodness of people. Cynthia Steward says shes still upset by it all. She was out of town when she got a call from her husband that something terrible had happened to their family dog named Bear. For her its been hard to bear the pain of his loss. It, it was just bizarre, Steward said. It just makes me so upset every time I think about it. Last week, the Steward familys 12-year-old Yorkie Bear was temporarily home alone lying on his favorite couch in the den. But, the new next door neighbors dog, a Lakeland Terrier, apparently dug underneath his backyard fence and was out loose. In an uncharacteristic move for a dog, the terrier went through the Stewards small rectangular doggie door and made his way into the house. The terrier then allegedly attacked the four-pound Bear on the couch and killed him. When the Stewards came home they were most assuredly devastated by the loss of a family pet that had barely survived after its birth. He was very, very premature and they fed him through tubes for six months of his life, Steward said. He was even smaller than a normal Yorkie. The Stewards shock at the death of Bear led them to putting the couch on their front lawn thats soon began to transform into a makeshift memorial, complete with a pillow inscribed with a rest in peace tribute and flowers, many of them coming from others touched by Bears death. The shrine just happened, she said. It just took on a life of its own. I would come home from work each day and there would be more flowers and more notes, and people would just bring like ceramics. Its restored my faith in humanity. I spoke by phone with the the Stewards next door neighbor who said his family is equally saddened by what happened. He said they just moved into the neighborhood four months ago and the incident has brought unwanted negative attention to his family. Hes hoping the stewards will change their minds about asking for his dog to be euthanized. A Germantown Police spokesperson told FOX13 News no charges against the dogs owner have been filed yet. So, for now the terrier remains with its owner. I dont want that dog to attack anything or anybody else, Steward said. Im just glad there were no children in my den when he went in. Lakeland Terriers are described as basically shy dogs, but they can become aggressive.
