Thoughts about the changing seasons.. . If happiness is the meaning and purpose of life, then we must be happy for all that comes into our life, for even misfortune blesses us if it builds our character and strengthens our faith in pursuing that which is good and noble. I am at the mall with my wife killing time as usual. I am at heightened degree of motivation and the foot traffic at the mall does not distract me at all. Then there is that harvest color of Amber and orange along with a haystack, scarecrow and pumpkins of all sizes in the middle of the mall, the sight is beholding a simple reminder about the Halloween (All Saints Day), the harvest season, Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday. No doubt the changing season is upon us and the feeling is contained in this poem... To everything there is a Season and everything is made beautiful in its time. There is a Winter season. A time when your roots grow. There is no harvest now! There is a Spring season. It is a time for planting. There is no harvest now! There is a Summer season. It is a time for great activity and growth. There is a minimal harvest now! Finally comes the joy of Autumn. This is life’s harvest time! So whatever the occasion may be, the changing of the Season is always a joy for me! If you think deeper, wouldnt it be great if our life was like that? Think about it. Who doesn’t want consistency, permanence and comfort? As one blogger puts it: All those things are good but unfortunately those very things are the same things that lead us to a life of complacency, mediocrity and status quo. Again look at the weather. Today as I look out the window it is dark and cloudy and there is a good chance of rain at some point. Definitely not the norm and not the best weather conditions in my opinion, but if it wasn’t for a day like today I don’t know if I would have ever given a second thought about the need or desire for the sun. He went on to say: The seasons of our life, work very much in the same way. Often we become comfortable in the season we are in. We are not stretched, we are used to the pattern, we probably even like the comfort and consistency we feel. It’s safe and the sea seems calm. But could all those things be what rock us into complacency? Maybe what we really need is for the season to change. Without the seasonal changes we experience in life, the dips and twists and turns that feel so uncomfortable at times, my guess would be that for most of us, we would never really think about the need, much less develop a desire for your God Here are 4 things I have learned as you encounter a change in season … 1. Remind – yourself that God knows exactly what He is doing and that He is faithful. Often what may seem like an unfortunate circumstance or an uncomfortable situation to you will never be something that is too big for God. Most of the time the season or the seasonal change you are in is the very thing needed for you to continue to grow, should you choose. Regardless of your choice, God is faithful through it all. 2. Remember – to stay connected. Don’t create a one-person island. First instinct for most is to shrink back, throw up your hands and give up when the season gets rough. Often we become recluse and content to sit in our own pity. Shake that attitude and get out and be with people. Call a friend and grab lunch or coffee. Find someone to talk to who has gone through what you are going through and listen and learn. You would be surprised what you hear as God uses them to minister to and encourage you. 3. Realize – who you can count on. This is BIG. You have to know who you can count on. In other words you have to weed out those in your life that only want to be in the know. Weed out those that call you and ask about you only so they can get the scoop and report back to the other noses. The people who you can count on are the people who are in the trenches with you. The ones who because they are on this life’s journey with you, are lifting you up in prayer because they want to see God’s best for your life. These are the people who would do anything for you not because you give them something in return, but because to them you are a friend and it is simply the right thing to do. You may be thinking, great where am I going to find people like that? I would agree that these genuine souls are not the majority, but if you look close at your life I bet you can find a few. Once you realize who they are keep them close and treat them well. You will be greatly blessed because of it. 4. Return – to a closeness to God. With life as crazy and as busy as it is, if not careful we can easily squeeze God out of our day. Better yet because we have a list of all the things we deem important to accomplish that day or because we live life in damage control, we often overlook the most important thing that should happen that day, which is spending time with God. Being intentional about spending time with God is a game changer, it should be a non–negotiable, a must, and a constant above everything else. If God feels far and distant or mute or uninvolved in your matter I would encourage you to re-examine the time you are spending with just you and him. Cheers! Joegar
