Thoughts for Elul 2014 by Rabbanit Shirel Dean 5 Elul, 5774 My beloved spoke, and said unto me: Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away. Song of Songs 2:10 I recently saw an article titled, “Out of Sight, Out of Mind” or “Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder”? Even though it had nothing to do with G-d, it made me think about my relationship with Him. If you are anything like me, you know how easily we can be distracted from spending real quality time in the Word. I’m not talking about a quick verse or two or even reading for study purposes...I’m speaking of those love-letter moments when you really listen to G-d’s voice as if He were a lover writing to you. Your heart skips a beat. You can’t wait to open the letter! You gobble up the words and embrace every thought. Then you sit back and close your eyes and relish the words, sipping each of them once more as one would a fine wine. For those moments, you are together even though you are physically separated. So, is every moment filled with hearts and flowers? No! Sometimes the words may not be pleasant because let’s face facts, every relationship has its moments of confrontation. However, when done in love, even confrontation can improve intimacy. I remember just such a time as I read these words from Song of Solomon. I had let myself get so busy doing, that I neglected the most important part of ministry...intimacy with G-d. When my husband and I get so busy with the multitude of things that demand our attention day by day, we often say to each other, “Let’s get away for some ‘us’ time.” While those us times cannot adequately substitute daily time spent with each other, they do help jog our memory of the importance of quality time with each other. Real intimacy requires this kind of time together each day What G-d spoke to me that day was not pleasant to hear. It’s never pleasant to hear you have neglected someone you love. But then He spoke tenderly, “Come away with me...” Do you long for intimacy with G-d? Perhaps He is speaking to you today, “Come away with Me to a quiet place.” Let me encourage you to pack your bags and go! You won’t regret it! Forgive me, Adonai for allowing so many things to distract me from intimacy with You. Here I am…lets spend some quality time together.
