Thoughts from Chief Sjolander... Chocolates, roses, and handcuffs... Ive said this a lot in the past...being in my life is not easy. I work too much, I sleep too little, Im always on my phone, my Ill be home in ten minutes normally means an hour, and Ive missed a lot of family functions due to working odd shifts or being called out over my career. Being chief means I work a lot less nights and weekends than I did years ago, but if Im not working, my co-workers are and they have family and friends who love them and wish they were home to spend time with. Ive learned a lot about relationships over the years and the one big lesson Ive shared more than any other is dont wait to say or show someone you love them. Life can change in a moment and we owe it to the people in our lives to let them know a care and they are needed. I was a cop before I met my wife. She knew I worked a lot and Im never completely off duty. She and my kids have accepted this and even through Im gone quite a bit, they all know how much I love them and we try to make our time together special. We dont always get to celebrate holidays when everyone else gets to, but we do what we can. A lot of people have this same issue, its not just cops. People working in health care, retail, farmers, commercial drivers, the list goes on and on...I hope they make the best of the moments they have with family and friends. Today is Valentines Day...A day for the exchange of tokens of affection. This is true from some, but for others, its just another twelve hour day at the office. I hope you show those that matter to you how much you care every chance you get, not just on holidays. As for me...Im off today, but have plenty to do. Mrs. Chief is working and I will have flowers delivered there and a homemade card waiting for her when she gets home. Ive learned over the years that spending $5.00 or more on a card is not nearly as nice as taking the time to make one. Im off to find some paper and crayons... Stay safe, Lee
