Thoughts from Chief Sjolander... Microsoft Scam Alert... Ive received a few messages from people asking me about yet another scam thats resurfacing again...and I got a call at home as well. Here is how it works... Someone calls you claiming to be from Microsoft or some other well known company. They tell you they have detected a problem with your computer and if you give them access to it, they will repair the problem. The Microsoft one is now being brought up again since Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft and for a small fee, you can have proper protection again or at least thats what I was told. When you give anyone access to your computer remotely or in person you can be opening up your life to them. They can get banking information, personal information like your social security number, full names and dates of birth, photos, e-mails, etc. They can also install harmful software that can ruin your computer. Please be careful when receiving a cold call from someone. They are very clever, will talk in a way that helps them appear real, and will call from a variety of phone numbers that are listed to real companies. When I told my computer support person that I only have an IPad, he was at a loss for words. I also asked him what computer he was receiving the error messages on and when he could not tell me, I asked if he would be willing to call me later at work. I explained that I have a PC there and maybe the trouble was with that machine. His said sure and was ready for my information. I asked that he call the Kenyon Police Department and ask for me later...He was very quite. I said I was a police officer and was very concerned about the security of my work PC...He hung up. Please share this with everyone you know and never let your guard down when it comes to phone, mail, or internet scams. Stay safe, Lee
