Thoughts from Chief Sjolander... Our state lost a peace officer today... While patrolling today, I receive an alert on my squad computer that no officer or agency wants to see. A shooting took place and the suspect or suspects are still at large. As details emerge, I learn that the person shot was a peace officer, and they died. Im sad, Im mad, and Im praying for the officers family, friends and those who are working this tragic scene. Incidents like this have a life long impact on everyone involved. I know this might sound odd, but Im also praying for the person who did this, their family, and their friends. I cant image what they are thinking right now and once more information is known, what their family and friends are going to think. If the person responsible has parents, siblings, a spouse, or children, their lives will be forever changed. Im praying for all my brothers and sisters in public safety across this state and nation. We have answered a tough calling and seeing a fellow public servant hurt is never easy. We are family, we feel pain, and we are loved by so many. Please keep the Mendota Heights MN Police Department, their city, and all of us in public safety in your thoughts today and hopefully everyday. While youre reading this, someone is getting the hardest news they will ever receive and are going to have to start rebuilding their lives without a loved one. Blessed are the peacemakers... Lee
