Thoughts from Chief Sjolander... Police Files... As Im walking out of the office, I hear a loud noise and look across the street. I see a young boy around 6 years old banging on a bicycle with a hammer. I watch him for a moment and I holler across the steet What are you doing he replies Fixing my bike. I walked over and ask if he would like some help. I explained that hitting a bike with a hammer works about as well as baptizing a cat...he just looks at me. I ask for some tools and start tighting the handlebars, then adjust the seat. As I continue my pit crew moves, I see the crank is damaged and in need of new parts. I ask if his parents are home, Im told yes. I visit with mom and explained that the bike needs work and part that we dont have, and I offer the family some bikes that I have in storage. They are older and used, but they were donations and I think this family could benefit from them. Mom says they would love the bikes and two boys follow me to our office. As we walk, the young hammer boy asks about my stars and what they are for. I explain that Im the chief of police and he asked if I make a lot of money. I say yes, but Im also paid in coffee and stickers...he just looks at me. Once in the office, he looks around and says Are you the only one working I say yes, he shakes his head. (I can tell that he is not very impressed by me, or our office) We head to where the bikes are stored and we take them out of our office and to their home. I explained that they need some work like greased chains and some air in the tires. I tell them where they can get the tires filled at and I leave. Ive watched the children ride these bikes for the last two days and every time they see me they yell Hey Mr. Lee I yell back and remind them to look before crossing the streets. They yell back We know! So there you have it. Its a tough life on the mean streets of Kenyon, but we get by. Stay safe, Lee
