Thoughts on the Mark Driscoll mess (now front page news for the New York Times): A. If evangelical leaders (especially The Gospel Coalition and John Piper) had listened to criticism 10-15 years ago, this could all have been avoided. B. Those who refused to criticize Driscoll and continued to support/promote him when they could have helped him are now the ones crying out for forgiveness and grace. Which is it? Hes done nothing wrong, or he needs forgiven? C. The power of celebrity worship causes people to feel sad for Driscoll but not for the people he gleefully referred to as piles of dead bodies under the Mars Hill bus, and by Gods grace it will be a mountain... D. Driscoll is not actually the issue. The issue is A. Revivalisms love for the anointed leader who can bring special blessings. and B. Revivalisms disdain for the ordinary church life and structure taught in the Bible. E. Repentance does not involve hiring a PR expert. It isnt a 6-week paid break. It isnt choosing your own accountability. F. Smoke and mirrors, and humans as photo props. G. Acts29 and John Piper are continuing to replicate the structures that have allowed this mess---arbitrary church polities that revolve around the effective, anointed, vision-caster while claiming to represent orthodox biblical practice. H. Mars Hill ought to reconstitute its campuses as local churches, get rid of the jumbo-trons, and form a presbytery-like structure in which the congregations are represented, led, and protected. I. Christians ought to be careful, circumspect, about tying their spiritual lives to these massive, $$$, brand-oriented coalitions (TGC, Acts29, etc.) that have a poor track record in what they have promoted. Find a biblically structured, historically grounded, confessional local church and bind yourself to it. Dont read mostly new stuff. Dont get sucked in to the new moves of God--find the old, faithful paths and walk in them. You will have enough on your plate just doing what God commands in your life, your family, and your church. If you dont know anything about these controversies in evangelicalism---good for you! Keep your head down, your eyes on Christ, and your feet in the path that leads to heaven. Grace be with all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with love incorruptible. Eph 6:24
