Three Years ago today I was back east for the homecoming of a group of Americas Heroes, the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, or the Two-Nine as they like to be called. Each battalion has a slogan, and theirs is Hell in a Helmet, and their history goes back to WWI when they were formed, through WWII where they were instrumental in the battles of Guam & Iwo Jima, up through Vietnam where they distinguished themselves during Khe Sanh & the ill fated invasion of Koh Tang Island. They were a lead battalion during Operation Desert Storm before being deactivated in 1994 due to restructuring of the Corps. Then in 2007 the unit was recommissioned as part of the 6th Marine Regiment and eventually deployed once to Iraq and three times to Afghanistan. Over the years the battalion has lost many a Marine, five Medal of Honor recipients have come from among their ranks as well as three Commandants & numerous other distinguished Marines. But the ones that will ALWAYS hold a special place in our hearts are the men who served in Marjah, Helmand Province, Afghanistan during some of the roughest times in that wars history, watching our sons back every day from July, 2010 through February of 2011. Semper Fi men. This ones for you.
