Three children and their father rescued just off St Bees beech. Three young children jumping waves on St Bees beech, one boy aged 13 and two girls aged 9 and 14. They came in to trouble as the current started to pull them out to sea. The father of the three children noticed that they had got in to difficulty and rushed to their rescue. Unfortunately he didn’t take one of the available life rings with him and he himself got in to trouble. Fortunately the two older children (aged 13 and 14) managed to get to safety on the rocks, leaving just the 9 year old and her father. The father of the children quickly deteriorated. A passer by, Josh Stewardson from Mirehouse, Whitehaven, saw the father in trouble and immediately grabbed a life ring and swam out to rescue him. He got there with no time to spare as the father was dropping under the water. There was also another unknown man who came to help with his body board, this was used to help keep all three men afloat until the lifeboat arrived. As this was unfolding and the lifeboat was launched, the youngest girl managed to get herself to safe land too, meaning all children were safe and sound on land, leaving just the men to rescue. A heroic rescue – no doubt the fathers life was saved due to the quick thinking and bravery of all involved, no-one more so than Josh Stewardson. This highlights two key points for beach safety, always keep a lookout for young children when they are swimming, and if the worst happens, always call for help and use a life ring wherever possible.
