Three local residents announced their candidacy for Long Beach City Council saying that it is time for a non-partisan approach to City government that includes elected officials with real financial and business experience to navigate the City through difficult economic times. Michael Franceschini, Janna Jachniewicz and Damian Walsh said they would be seeking an independent line for City Council and have received the Long Beach Republican endorsement providing them a major party line in November. Running with them will be Theodore (Ted) Hommel for City Court Judge. Michael Franceschini is a forensic accountant/investigator and retired special agent of the United States Treasury Department, Criminal Investigation Division, Janna Jachniewicz is an attorney and a senior contract oversight and development manager and Damian Walsh is a businessman and an elementary school teacher. The three candidates who have never been involved in political campaigns before said that its time for a clean slate of elected officials not tied to past or present City Hall politics. “For too long we have seen democrats and republicans play the blame game for poor decisions made by current and past administrations, tearing down our City’s reputation along the way. While there is enough blame to go around it is time to move forward and elect council members less interested in party politics and who know and understand finances and budgets , investigate fraud and waste, generate revenue and cut costs,” the three said. “Holding the line on taxes, assisting homeowners to get back in their houses, businesses to revitalize, storm protection and rebuilding the infrastructure is the priority of all of our residents. During the next six months until Election Day, we will be speaking directly to voters, sharing our ideas and listening to theirs. We also seek to bring much needed civility to the local City Council debate as we hope our opponents will”, said the three candidates. Franceschini worked for more than 25 years as a special agent with the U.S. Treasury Department Criminal Investigation Division. He is a forensic accountant/investigator with extensive experience in conducting and supervising complex financial investigation, including financial fraud, organized crime, public corruption and narcotic activities. He has worked closely with law enforcement agencies including the FBI, US Secret Service and U.S. Attorney’s Office. Janna Jachniewicz, an attorney, works for a major financial and professional services firm where she specializes in contract oversight and development management. Her responsibilities include handling facility management agreements, contract drafting, negotiation and oversight, budgeting, audit compliance, procurement and energy purchasing. She has a B.B.A. in International Business, an M.B.A. in Finance, and a Juris Doctorate in Law. She previously worked as an Assistant Comptroller for a Heavy Equipment Company. Damian Walsh is a resident of the West End whose home was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy and is working through the red tape to rebuild. A local businessman, he is the Founder and CEO of the popular Ribeye Brothers Cheesesteaks in Island Park. As an entrepreneur, he grew a startup into a successful business through creative marketing and innovative sales techniques. Walsh is also an elementary school teacher and he is the Treasurer of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division 17, a former treasurer of the West End Neighborhood Civic Association and former Secretary to the Long Beach Bulldogs Football League. Walsh has a B.B.A. in Business and has his Masters Degree in Education. Theodore (Ted) Hommel, candidate for City Court Judge is a practicing attorney with more than 35 years of legal experience serving in a number of capacities including as a Deputy Nassau County Attorney, Assistant Corporation Counsel in the City of Long Beach and as an attorney in private practice. He has handled all aspects of law, including criminal, real estate, labor and corporate law. He has also handled vehicle and traffic law, city code enforcement prosecution and commercial transactions including contracts and lease agreements, as well as other municipal law. Hommel is a lifelong third generation resident whose family owned and operated Kavanagh Oil Company for 44 years from approximately 1945 until 1989 when it was sold. Prior to 1945 Ted’s grandfather, Myles Kavanagh, operated an ice and coal delivery business, the forerunner to Kavanagh Oil Co.
