The posts are associated with the European Research Council project “Youth Citizenship in Divided Societies: Between Cosmopolitanism, Nation and Civil Society” or YouCitizen. The focus of the project is on the experience and meaning of citizenship for youth in three countries that have experienced division and conflict: South Africa, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Lebanon. The project examines the efforts of international organisations, civil society organisations and states to foster citizenship amongst youth. The project’s critical intervention is in extending the analysis of these efforts to consider the ways in which youth interpret, experience, challenge, and potentially remake citizenship. The project examines the constructions of citizenship that travel through networks of states and international and civil society organisations and that are experienced and remade as youth move through their daily lives. The project is led by Lynn Staeheli (Durham), Alex Jeffrey (Cambridge), Dan Hammett (Sheffield) and Sandy Marshall (Durham). The posts are tenable for up to 36 months and are based in Durham, but involve approximately 18 months of residential fieldwork in South Africa, Bosnia-Herzegovina, or Lebanon (although the security situation may require a change in plans for the Lebanese case study). Experience conducting fieldwork in one of the three countries is required.
