Three restaurants at the Gulf City Mall food court shut down by Public Health (By TTnewsflash Reporter) THREE restaurants in the Gulf City Mall Food court were today closed down by officials of the Public Health Department of the San Fernando City Corporation. One popular breakfast and lunch outlet on Cipero Street was also shut down. In a release, San Fernando Mayor, Dr. Navi Muradali said “it is again very disappointing that restaurant owners are not heeding the call of the public health authorities and putting the lives of the public at risk. It is time we review the old legislation and create harsher penalties against delinquent restaurant owners. He added “the health and safety of the public is of utmost priority in the City, and the Office of the Mayor would work with all to ensure our food preparation and handling is first-class.” The team of Public Health Inspectors, led by the City Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Ingrid Poon King, accompanied by PHI IV John Ramkhelewan, PHI III Mr. Alexander Ramnath, and the City Police, visited seven restaurants in the Gulf City Food Court and one food outlet of Cipero Street. Poor kitchen conditions, unhygienic food preparation, absence of updated food badges, flies and cockroaches, and improper storage of food were among some of the violations. The closed restaurants in the Gulf City Food Court were Little Italy, Hakka Express, and Stew’s Caribbean Cuisine. A breakfast and lunch outlet adjacent to the Board of Inland Revenue Office on Cipero Street was also ordered closed. The public health exercise also inspected night-vending areas in Cross Crossing, Cocoyea, and Marabella in the past few weeks, and some vendors have been ordered to discontinue the sale of food items. The City of San Fernando recently pledged to become the newest member of the PAHO/WHO’s “Healthy City” initiative.
