Three times so far Ive noticed people coming to the counter and, looking slightly confused, ask for that book, as in Have you got that book, its, um, I cant remember the title... or similar. In November these were Jewish customers unable to remember The Marrying of Chani Kaufman, a novel on the Booker longlist. A month back it was Black customers whod not been swift enough to buy Black People in Tudor England when stock ran out at events and were checking on the restock. Now the that book de jour is Capital in the Twenty-First Century by Thomas Pikitty, required reading for Guaridanistas. Not one of them can remember the title or author but that book works fine. Capital sold out all over the UK and were waiting on fresh stock from the USA, which should arrive in a few days.
