Three tortoises stuck in tar A conservation officer is trying - TopicsExpress

Three tortoises stuck in tar A conservation officer is trying already more than a week to clean 3 turtles after they got stuck in tar... the tar is presumed to be dumped in the field between Mata and Loeriesfontein shed. Nico Laubscher, enforcer of the department of environmental affairs, said a local resident found theturtles more than a week ago near the road between Mata and Loeriesfontein. The road is currently being paved. He noticed a movement in the grass and saw the animals. The tortoises moved, but were horribly stuck. It seems that the excess tar was thrown in the field by the contractors. The tar was probably still hot when the turtles walked over it and later cooled. The resident has loosened them with chunks and all and brought them to me. I have spent hours and used many methods trying to get the tar off. I tried the tar with a hair dryer to warm them, and quickly wipe away. Two turtles can not use all four feet because the tar is stuck on the inside of their shell. He put the turtles in the sun so that the tar can become warm and soft. He also used diesel it to wipe off. Its been better than before. The turtles eat grass and shrubs in the cage nicely. Chrystal Robertson, spokesman for the department of public works, was not yesterday for comment. beeld/nuus/2014-09-04-drie-skilpadjies-sit-vas-in-teer
