Three weeks into the industrial action called by the joint health sector unions, a Nursingworld Nigeria correspondent sampled nurses in selected healthcare institutions in a bid to determine compliance level of nurses to the call to down tools in both federal, state and local government health institutions At Ibeju lekki General hospital in Akodo, it has been confirmed that all their nurses are on Ground working tirelessly like never before. It was learnt they had all been threatened by their Admin Nurse CM EZEKWEM who warned that if they dont come to work they would be reported at the Healthservice commission (HSC). Intimidation has been used by heads of nursing departements as there are several units running full medical services just because they were coerced by their apex nurses and CMD, who threatened that they wont be paid their salaries (example island marternity, orile agege, ifako ijaiye, Mushin), all these hospitals have nurses working despite the strike. Most hospitals in Lagos are being threatened with no work no pay, with most Hospital managements passing circulars in respect of this. From the General Hospital IKORODU, We learnt that a text message attributed to the Hospitals Chief Matron to her Nurses read: Good day, do you know that your roster still remain the same. HSC said No strike, NO WORK, NO PAY. Even the most junior Nurse is working in mufti. If you like stay at home. In a swift reaction, the Lagos State NANNM Chairman Comrade Onkebody issued a statement: Great nurses! We cannot do but have a number of black sheep amongst us but with persistent effort we shall change them to white. Be informed that monitoring have started. Kudos to hospitals wth total compliance. If you still allow intimidation, molestation, coersion from Cmd or MD who did not do that during the doctors strike , you are on your own! Mind you nursing is a profession sui generis i.e not subject to any control by other profession. The time for freedom is now. Lets join hands together so well get to the promised land. I wellcome your comments, observations & contributions. Without you, there is no Nannm. Aluta continua From the Federal Medical Centre Yenogoa we got the report that in the month of August,2014 some sets of health personnel were employed by hospital management board to work in otuoke hospital as an annex to Fmc, yenagoa. Some of the newly employed staff of otuoke are being made to work during this strike in Fmc yenagoa, Bayelsa while other staffs are working at otuoke, though the old or permanent staffs of Fmc, yenagoa are currently observing the strike action. When the newly employed staffs tried to join the strike, the commissioner of health threated to sack any health worker who tried to join in the strike. The commissioner informed the newly employed staffs that they are not part of the union (JOHESU) and should know that they are not confirmed yet as staffs Stating that no one should try to join the strike. On contacting the DDNS Yenegoa Comrade Amachree, she stated that The commisioner did visit the FMC and talked to the Staff on ground. She also confirmed that attendance was taken to confirm those who came to work and that the statement credited to the commisioner was true as he did say that the contract staff have not recieved their appointment letters and could be subject to disengagement if they decide to join the strike. As such its this: ..e to work and keep your jobs or join the strike and lose it, your choice... The NANNM Chairman Yenegoa Comrade Ikemo when contacted to get her reaction to this said she was busy and would get back to us, attempts to call her back proved abortive. At the Federal Medical Centre in Taraba State, Nurses have been reported to still be on full time shift. In kwara state, the NANNM Chairman insisted that theres no strike action for the state and that everyone should go to work. Reports from Jigawa has it that the state has never taken part in any strike action called by NANNM and there has never being a time where the national secretariat has called them to order Work has been reported to be fully going on in lautech teaching hospital OGBOMOSO, Oyo state. The reports state that the hospital leaders have decided not to join in the strike action. All other local and govt hosp are not on strike. But UCH is on strike though. In Benin city (UBTH) to be precise, Reports state that Student Nurses/Midwives are still being ordered to work in the hospital by the CNOs, principal and CMD. Even the CNOs were reported to be on ground to work In Bauchi, Nurses comment that they are anxious to join the strike action but at the moment there has been a failure by their leaders to provide a notification letter for us.
