Three weeks of bulking remain before I begin cutting for next my competition season. I am taking full advantage of this to continue my journey into the delicious world of nut butters…. Today I am reviewing a butter made with blanched Californian almonds, honey and flax seeds from Barney Butter UK, available online at The Protein Pick and Mix. BARNEY & CO. ALMOND BUTTER: HONEY AND FLAX I want to start by saying that I LOVE receiving my delivery from The Protein Pick & Mix because their products come wrapped up in gorgeous candy colour pink and white bags. This packaging makes me feel so nostalgic and re-creates the excitement of a childhood treat. It’s just like receiving a present - especially if you are anything like me and buy so much that you forget what you ordered! The great thing about The Protein Pick & Mix is that the products are not only a yummy treat but also clean! One of my little striped bags contains a 10z (248g) jar of Barney’s Almond Butter with Honey and Flax. The dark green label reflects the ingredients which are wholly natural and organic. The packaging also makes clear that the product is peanut and gluten free: perfect for those with intolerances or food allergies. INGREDIENTS: Blanched Roasted Californian Almonds, Flaxseeds, Powdered Honey, Palm Fruit Oil (certified Sustainable). I find the nutritional information a little confusing because I am used to per 100g, whereas here it is measured in amount per serving, which is 2 tbsp (32g). NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION PER SERVING (32G): Calories: 180 Carbs: 7g of which Sugar: 2g Fibre: 6g Fat: 16g Protein: 6g Once the lid is unscrewed, there is a seal to keep the butter fresh and air tight. Peeling back the seal is fun because there is butter stuck to the underside so I can’t resist licking that off straight away! SMELL: Very nutty: more like peanut than almond but that could just be my strange sense of smell! I can’t wait to dive in (oh…hold on…I already licked the lid!) TEXTURE: The butter needs a good stir with a fork because of the oil separation. Once it has been mixed together, it becomes luscious and gloopy. The almonds are ground twice which creates a very smooth and sticky texture. Because is it smooth, this butter is also easily spreadable (and very easy to eat straight out of the jar with a spoon!) The flax seeds add an extra crunch: they give a similar sensation of popping candy in a chocolate bar, but are a natural version full of fibre! TASTE: WOW! The initial sweet notes of almond and honey give this particular butter a depth of flavour that I haven’t tasted in other almond butters. The bitter almond skins are removed during the blanching process which leaves the butter deliciously sweet, without being sickly. Light roasting enhances the flavour of the almonds, which blends perfectly with the honey. This particular butter would be a good accompaniment to either sweet or savoury foods. I ate mine with turkey and it was perfect! I can’t wait to try it on my rice cakes on high carb day; maybe a dollop in my protein shake would be nice…. If you haven’t tried Barney’s Butters, I strongly recommend checking them out! The full range is available to purchase online at The Protein Pick & Mix, official sponsors of PureElite Comp :)
