Thressa Giles Wood, Buddy Giles, Phillip Giles, Bobby Giles, Lisa Giles Etheredge, Mary Lowery, Stephen Byrd, William Byrd Linda Kriss Buckh I was doin a maint clean polish n wax on a pair of work shoes and when I opened the shoe wax can I began to have flash backs to when I was 7-8 years old. I ask Mother if I could get a job an she said yes so I went to Billy Faulks Barber Shop and ask if he had something I could do. He said he would let me keep the floor swept, trash emptied etc for a dollar a day for Thur, fri sat and a pack of Juicy Fruit gum. I then ask if I could shine shoes too, he said as long as I kept his shop clean. I got my first job other than mowing grass! Working there impacted my life forever; the passionate opinions expressed by some on everything from local politics to national n global while in a room filled wth cigar n cigarette smoke. The chatter only paused long enough to express greetings to someone coming into the shop. I used Tommys Shoe Shine stand if they where not in a barbers chair. If they were in the chair I had to finish b4 the barber. Penny Loafers were the most popular shoes and white socks; spit shines, popping my shoe towel, flipping my shoe brush, tossing it from hand to hand and more became beneficial attracting me more customers. But woe to me if I got the black or brown shoe polish wax on those white socks! I know mr Howard had the chair by the window, billy had the back chair but I cant remember who had the middle chair; seems like a mr Williams?? Anyway, I would come home wth pockets full of change adding up to several dollars a day, especially sat! Mother was amazed and made me feel so good about my earnings. I claim to of been the first skate boarder in Rdale as I had never seen anybody riding one b4 I got mine. Took a pocket full of change to Nalls 5&10 where Aunt Gladys showed it to me and I think it cost me less than $5. She thought it was neat too. All that from a can of weak brown shoe wax...
