Through 22 games, Arsenal are on top of the Premier League with 51 points. But with a tight race at the top of the table along with a number of injuries, the Gunners are hoping to make a late splash in the transfer window. The loss of Theo Walcott was a big blow to the Arsene Wengers side, as they are trying to continue to stay on top of the Premier League without their speedy striker. But Arsenal will have to keep going without him as they try to stay ahead of teams like Manchester City and Chelsea. One name that has come up recently has been 20-year-old midfielder Julian Draxler who currently plays for Schalke. According to John Cross of Mirror Football, Arsenal have offered €30 million for the young midfielder, but there are some complications: But Schalke want more as Draxler, 20, has a £38million buy out clause which is valid only in the summer and the German club believe more clubs will be interested in the summer. However, it would seem that the clubs are close to agreeing a compromise with Arsene Wenger keen to bring him in now rather than risk other clubs come in this summer. If the Gunners are able to finally grab Draxler, either before the transfer window closes or next summer, Wenger may want to convert him to a new position. Cross reported that Wenger may want to move him from an attacking midfielder to a center-forward, hoping to turn him into the next Robin van Persie. Draxler has been an emerging player for Schalke, showing off some strong shooting along with speed and vision. Keep in mind that hes just 20 years old, and his game is continuing to develop. It appears that Arsenal will continue to work on bringing in Draxler as the transfer window draws to a close. Wayne Veysey from Goal reported that Gunners officials have traveled to Germany to talk with Schalke, saying: The Premier League leaders will attempt to broker a deal for Schalke sensation Draxler in a bid to sign him before Friday’s transfer deadline, and they will also open negotiations with Frankfurt over a move for right-back Sebastian Jung. Preliminary discussions have taken place between Schalke and Arsenal, and the Gunners have also learned that Draxler is keen to move to the Emirates Stadium and follow in the footsteps of fellow German internationals Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski. Despite all of the rumblings between the two sides, things took an interesting turn on Jan. 27, as Schalke denied that Draxler is heading to Arsenal. According to Sky Sports, Schalke general manager Horst Heldt claimed that there has been no contact with Arsenal or any other club for that matter. With the transfer window closing on Jan. 31, time is running out for this deal to get done, so we will just have to wait and see if both sides decide to pull the trigger before the deadline.
