Through a gap in the trees he spotted a thicket where large bushes that were higher than his head grew clumped together and formed a circle through which a narrow path wound. The thicket was sheltered by the low-lying branches of smaller trees that intertwined over the bushes and surrounded them. To Abelard, it seemed as if he had walked into a private sanctuary in the midst of the woods, so quiet and serene it was. He tied Larkspur to a tree and huddled under the branches; they were invisible to all eyes while in the thicket, and he was grateful for the sense of protection it gave him. As he lay on the ground the sounds of spring peepers serenaded him and deepened his sense of peace. A nightingale warbled from somewhere nearby, and from far in the distance a wolf sang to the moon. But Abelard did not hear it, for he had fallen fast asleep. From Abelard and the Dragon’s Vapor available at amazon.
