MARGARET HIGGINS SANGER: (1879*1966) a Corning native, who is known throughout the world as a leader of the birth control movement in the early 1900s. Sanger, jailed and vilified for beliefs that outraged many religious groups of the day, was not well-treated during her childhood and had unpleasant memories of Corning. Many believe her views on birth control stem from her childhood. As the 5th of 11 children in a poor Irish family that lived on the wrong side of the tracks, she could look up the hill at small wealthy families and see how much more they were able to give their children. In 1925, Sanger organized the International Birth Control League, forerunner of Planned Parenthood World Population. FREDERICK CARDER: (1863-1963) a native of Staffordshire, England, who founded the Steuben Glass Works in Corning in 1903. Carder was also recognized for his work in designing murals for Rockefeller Center, as a member of the advisory committee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and a fellow in the Royal Society of Arts in London. CALVIN U. SMITH: (1895-1983) principal and district school superintendent (1931-1961), called the father of centralization in the formation of the Corning-Painted Post Consolidated School District.
