Throwback Friday: It’s that time of the week again. Time for a look back into the history of Bourne. I thought this week we could look at some classic images of the machines that helped carve the Cape Cod Canal. Who knows, the way the weather pattern is looking we might need them for the snow here. Anyone who has seen this season of Gold Rush can guess what machines I’m talking about since Tony Beets is trying to rebuild one in the Klondike. The work horses of the canal construction project were the dredges. They started way back in the 1880’s with Lockwood’s dredge entering from the Scusset end at Cape Cod Bay to when Belmont and Company began digging in the early 1900’s. The array of different style dredges is awe inspiring when you consider this was 1912, not 2014. Twenty-six different dredges were used during canal construction. I thought you would enjoy seeing a couple of different machines that helped dig out the history of our area. Thank you for taking a stroll back in time with us this week and as always, “Let’s be careful out there.”
