Throwback Thursday... In early August 2005, way past their deadline, I contacted the Montreal World Film Festival and told the festival director that I found a film from the 1st Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival. That film was Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros (The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros). It was directed by a first time director (then) Auraeus Solito (now known as Kanakan Balintagos), written by Magnifico writer Mich Yamamoto and produced by (then) Raymond Lee (now Moira Lang). The festival invited the film in their First Feature competition and bagged the Golden Zenith Award. The first and until now, only Filipino film to win an award in Montreal. During the festival, I was also able to sell the European rights to a French distributor. The film was screened in Sundance 2006 and won the Crystal Bear Award in the then Kinderfest (now Generation) section in Berlin 2006. As they always say, the rest is history.
