Throwback Thursday! Let’s fly over the ocean and Europe and head over to the Middle East to visit the santur, a Persian (Iranian) dulcimer. The santur, traditionally, is made of walnut, has 72 strings (18 sets of 4), two rows of 9 bridges, and ranges three octaves. It is played with a set of feather-light, oval-shaped hammers called mezrabs. The three sections of the instrument are separated into the bass, middle, and high octave (which is called Poshte Kharak). It is tuned diatonically, utilizing quarter tones, to play in the 12 modes (dastaghs) that compromise the classical Radif. It is thought to be the oldest dulcimer (aside from possible ancestors dating back to Mesopotamia), and where dozens of other countries modeled the idea of their dulcimers from.
