Throwback Thursday The Wellington Independent, Wednesday, October 25, 1848, reporting on the M 7.4-7.7 earthquake in Marlborough District which caused significant damage in Wellington: “...it cannot be denied that the quantity of rain which fell during the winter, pouring into the bowels of the earth, and coming in contact with substances which are well known to generate heat and steam, or gas has in a great measure produced the convulsions which we have now to record.” After interviewing Maori elders who could not recall such a large earthquake in their lifetime, the paper concluded that “we are surely justified in considering the present as an extraordinary occurrence, an occurrence which in all probability may not occur again”.
