Throwback Thursday: initially constructed in the summer of 2012 and completed exactly two years ago, my giant 5-foot functional LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System controller was one of my most ambitious projects to date. Built as a byproduct of my cancelled Batmobile event sponsored by Ripleys Believe it or Not! in Times Square, this gargantuan model was intended originally to be a monument of the 25th anniversary of the U.S. release of Legend of Zelda. The bulk of the structure was built throughout the summer/fall of 2012, but ran into numerous delays due to financial issues, but was finally finished with electronic components tested in December 2012. The large buttons are suspended via LEGO Technic shock absorbers, and make contact with small momentary pushbuttons which are linked to the inner circuit board of an original NES controller that I hacked apart. When calibrated, the giant controller connects to a computer and works as a game pad! In January of 2013, this creation caught the attention of Nintendo of America who eventually commissioned me to design a store display for the spring release of LEGO City: Undercover at Rockefeller Center!
