Throwback Thursday to 71 years ago, when the first baby was born at Lompoc Hospital, now Lompoc Valley Medical Center. Heralded as being delivered by Doc Stork, Lawrence Centeno Jr. was born the weekend of Jan. 23-24, 1943 on the first day the hospital opened for business. The birth of little Lawrence earned his parents a huge basket of goodies, including a quart of milk every day for 60 days from Reedsons Dairy; a silver baby spoon from Pryors Jewelry Store; a dozen diapers from Robersons Variety Store and $5 in war savings stamps. He was delivered by Dr. M.V. Duncan.
