Throwback to those Common app days. This was my supplement to the Williams essay (which may or may not come later.) Obama used to be my dude but now...... On Tuesday, November 4th, 2008, the citizens of the United States of America will make an unprecedented move. We will elect either the first African-American president, or the first female vice president. When I see Barack Obama on television giving speeches and debating against political powerhouses like John McCain and the Clintons, it makes me proud to be an African-American man. Win or lose, Barack has been one of the best role models that I have ever had. Smart, eloquent, well-spoken, honest, and charismatic, Barack Obama represents everything that I hope to be in life. When faced with slanderous adversity he refused to partake in the mudslinging. In the African-American community, the meaning of the word success can be misconstrued with regard to material items. Indeed, the most popular members of our community are rappers and sports stars who own cars, many homes, and have an obscene amount of money. Before Barack came into the spotlight, it was never cool to be African-American and smart. I have been ostracized many times by people who look just like me for trying to do well in school and make something of myself. In addition to taking the nation by storm in this election, Barack Obama has given me a sight that I had yet to see in my life prior to his coming out party. Seeing Barack Obama have so much success without rapping about womanizing or dribbling a basketball has given me so much hope for the future. I have always thought that I could be anything I wanted to be, but I was hard-pressed to find someone who looked like me to bring that belief to life. Despite coming from a middle class background, Barack has indeed made it cool to be African-American and smart, and he has even made it cool to speak proper English. Unlike so many rappers or African-American pro athletes, Barack Obama has also taught me to never forget where I came from. Seeing Barack Obama has truly made me a believer.
