Thunderstorms spreading across most of Queensland this week Rob Sharpe, Thursday December 4, 2014 - 14:36 EDT Love them or hate them, widespread thunderstorms will cover large tracks of Queensland each day for more than a week. Over the past few weeks thunderstorms have become more prevalent across Queensland due to a series of low pressure troughs moving across the state before stalling in the east, drawing moisture from the east and heat from central Australia. The consistent easterly component winds along the coast are continuing to increase moisture levels across the state, meaning that this week is looking stormier than each of the preceding weeks. This is bad news for the tens of thousands of home owners in Brisbane who wont be seeing repairs done for weeks and months. Showers are a risk each day until Thursday of next week, with the thunderstorm risk developing over the weekend. Thankfully, at this stage storms dont look as severe as the storm last week, but severe storms are still a chance in the area on a couple of days. The news of widespread thunderstorms is good news for many farmers across Queensland who are in dire need of rainfall. The news that we are in El Nino-like conditions and could still see a fully fledged El Nino means many farmers are preparing for a dry summer. This week many farmers will be celebrating their best rain in many months. The inland districts likely to see the most widespread rainfall from thunderstorms this week are the Darling Downs/Granite Belt, closely followed by the Central Highlands/Coalfields, North West and eastern parts of the Central West and Maranoa/Warrego. These districts are likely to see scattered falls above 50mm and isolated totals above 100mm. This rain is not going to be drought breaking for Queensland, but hopefully in late summer we will see tropical wet season rains descend through Queensland in a well placed low pressure trough. - Weatherzone © Weatherzone 2014
