Thura U Shwe Man to Be Nominated for USDP President Should He Win Most Votes in 2015 ……………………………………………………..……………………………………………………………………………………….. Yangon, June 10 U Htay Oo, Secretary General of the Union Solidarity and Development Party, has reported to the Voice that Thura U Shwe Man, Chairman of the said party, would be put forward as a candidate for presidency if the group won the most votes in the 2015 general election. Thura U Shwe Man is said to have expressed his desire for presidency in his meeting with the Burmese at the Myanmar Embassy in the United States. “We agree to nominate the party chairman for the 2015 presidential election. He will become president should he earn the most votes,” says U Htay Oo. He adds that whether or not the party will achieve the most votes depends solely on the public and that he believes the citizens will elect the party. Thura U Shwe Man will act as the speaker of the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw on July 1st, 2013. On the other hand, NLD chairperson Daw Aung San Su Kyi claimed at the World Economic Forum that she wished to run for president in the 2015 election and that the constitution needed to be amended in order to make her qualified for the position. U Htay Oo affirms that revising the constitution is not a task that can be conducted single-handedly by the Hluttaw chairman but one that requires the help of all Hluttaw delegates and civilians. Regardless, he says, only the parts that require change will be amended. NLD spokesperson Daw Nan Khin Htway Myint maintains that the NLD’s attitude toward Hluttaw Chairman Thura U Shwe Man being nominated for president remains the same and that both parties will benefit if the constitution is amended fairly. “Because we cannot take part in this election unless the constitution is revised, we will try to change it,” says Daw Nan Khin Htway Myint. “The adjustments to the 2008 constitution are now being set and will be declared soon,” adds the spokesperson. At the USDP’s youth conference on May 1st, U Thein Sein resigned as chairman of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) and relinquished the post to Hluttaw Chairman Thura U Shwe Man.
