Thursday - July 31st - Steady and Confused By Carol Buzalsky — 15 minutes ago Mom continues to be stable. YEAH!!! It was another day of lots of sleeping and a few visitors. Marlene, Kim and Madison were with her this morning. Moms hair looked great when Nathan and I arrived thanks to the wonderful brushing and combing job by Kim and Madison. Mom loves to have her hair combed so I am sure she enjoyed the attention this morning. I stopped in to check on mom again late afternoon to find her with eyes wide open and alert. She was the most interactive I have seen her in a week. She smiled a few small smiles and responded to questions. By the time JR stopped to see her on his way home from work she was ready for a nap again. Mom continues to be on the ventilator. She will have a tracheostomy either tomorrow or Monday depending on doctor schedules for performing the procedure and moms status. She continues to receive dialysis and the tube feedings are going well. The stuffed puppy dog Nathan gave his grandmother back in April while she was at Altru continues to be very useful! Mom tried to tell Marlene and I something this afternoon but since she cant talk and her hand control due to her weakness and being covered in a warming cover along with blankets is somewhat limited we could not figure it out. I grabbed the wonderful puppy from the shelf and asked mom to point to what hurt. She pointed to the tummy so we finally figured out she was struggling with nausea. My title for this journal not mom! I spent the day working on paper work and phone calls related to all sorts of stuff for mom. My largest puzzle is that mom is now eligible for Medicare on Sept 1st. That date is fast approaching. I need to decide on Medicare Original with a Part D drug plan, Medicare Advantage with a Part D, or Medicare Original with a Medigap plan. I work in health care and with moms medication list and unknowns for her care the remainder of the year my head is swimming in information and dollars. What a challenge this is!
