Thursday, September 11, 2014 Ephesians 4:16, “From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.” Paul is teaching us about the need of unity in the church body. The word “compacted” means “firmly united.” What is the opposite of “firmly united?” Would not it be chaos, disunity? In the church body each member is important and has a necessary function. It is like our natural body when the arms and legs work together under the power of the brain in the head. So, Christ is the head and the body is to work under His power and authority. Have you gotten up in the night and stumped your little toe on the corner of the bed? Even though it is just the little toe that might seem so insignificant, it still affects the body. If one member is not fulfilling their place, in the church, it puts a load on the other members. Paul covers this in 2 Corinthians 8:14, even though he is speaking of church finances, the principle will work in any area of the church body. Anytime a minister, a deacon, or a member entertains the idea that they must be involved in everything is the moment unity does not exist and confusion sets in. Christ has designed the church to edify, build up itself in love. That love starts with loving God (Matthew 22:37) and filters to us loving one another (1 Peter 1:22). Remember, love is a commitment and it begins with our commitment to God.
