Thursday of Comic Con included something new. Genny decided to - TopicsExpress

Thursday of Comic Con included something new. Genny decided to make her first foray into cosplay. Even she cant say exactly how or why she decided to but decide she did and so for the last week before Comic Con, she went about finding and (mostly) making the things she needed for it. She had a black cat suit so decided on Black Cat, the villain from Spider-man comics. She hadnt realized that Marv had created Black Cat when she picked the character but that was a bonus. I went online and found her reference art to what turned out to be about a half-squillion variations that have appeared over the years, changing some of the costume bits from white to black and making the v-neck of the outfit deeper and deeper (and the characters breasts larger and larger). I suggested she go for how the character looked for her original appearance. Much of the day of the convention, we spent walking around the Exhibit Hall together, seeing what various publishers, dealers, etc. had on display. Lots of folks stopped her for photos, which was kind of cool. Most fun was when other women dressed as the same character (its a popular one to do, though most go for later incarnations) stopped and wanted to have their photo taken with her. I texted Marv and got him to meet us. Photos ensued. (Thanks to Sara Katz-Scher and Neil Williams for taking the photo with Genny and Marv with an actual camera.) Over the course of the day, we encountered many friends, several of whom either didnt recognize Genny at all (Hello, Dean) or told us they only recognized her because she was standing near me. The costume wasnt as hot as she expected so she ended up wearing it the whole day and to the parties that evening. Besides cosplay-related events, much of the day was uneventful. Touched base with a few people and we figured out when pre-discussed meetings might take place. (Comic Con isnt a great place for meetings because its so crowded and there are so many distractions, but it gets people from all over the country into one place.) And, of course, saw and got a chance to speak with many friends who I happened to run into. Among them got a chance to briefly chat with Sergio Aragones, the terrific artist of Mad Magazine and Groo the Wanderer fame. Sergios a great guy who seems to always be in a good mood. Last year he went through some health issues, with his back and his hip, but now he seems in fine fettle (whatever fettle is). He told me hes 77. And seems a good 20 years younger. At 6:00 pm, I was on and moderating the Breaking Into Animation Writing panel. We had a great group of panelists. Long time and talented writers Dean Stefan and Charlotte Fullerton, newly-broken-in writer Patrick Rieger, and VP of Marvel Animation, Cort Lane. The audience seemed enthusiastic and I think we gave them some good information. And if Dean could just learn to time to his replies to fit our timeslot... (Deans a good friend and weve worked on a couple projects together, including one weve been working on recently. And a witty storyteller. But short his stories arent. ;-) ) And Cort was able to give advice not just from the point of view of writers but from what the studios are looking for. More about Thursday in the next update.
