Time for an update! Since it was announced last week that Stepheni Lazar would be the temporary (interim) director, GRACE has requested two things of the Board of Commissioners. 1) Provide the job posting so that we can help recruit excellent candidates for the permanent position 2) Allow GRACE to be a part of the interview and selection process. We are glad to report that yesterday, the Board voted upon and approved the prompt posting for the Director position. As soon as it is available, we will share it with you. For now, please start talking with people and thinking about who you know that has great compassion, is innovative, extremely hard working, has great people management skills and is 100% committed to saving lives. We have not received any official response on the request to be involved in the process. We will continue our communication on this point. To be clear, we are not asking to have a vote, just to be involved and have a voice. This process was allowed in Macomb County and it resulted in an excellent new Director being hired earlier this year. Had Genesee County allowed for valuable input like this in 2011, we would likely not be in the boat we are in currently. One procedure change at the shelter has taken place. They are no longer requiring visitors to turn over their drivers license before visiting the animals. Cell phones and cameras are still prohibited in the kennel area, unfortunately. But at least this change is a move in the right direction. The last big news is that this Saturday, August 3rd at 11am we are going to have our first volunteer orientation at Genesee County Animal Control since May. We are so excited! Based upon the applications coming in and the responses so far, we are expecting a crowd! And that is just what we need. The current volunteers have been working so hard and running so fast trying to keep up with giving just a tiny bit of relief and care to the animals every day. With more volunteers we can make such a difference in their lives while they are in the shelter, and make them so much more likely to be adopted. If you have been thinking about volunteering at GCAC, please don’t wait. Come on out on Saturday and see what it is all about.
