Time for one last look at some films that came out in 1984, starting with a first for composer Peter Gabriel. He is best known as the theatrical lead singer for the prog-rock band Genesis (before he left and Phil Collins took over on vocals, they were a very different band) and as a solo artist, he had his share of hits. Director Alan Parker tapped him to provide the music for Birdy, and while it mostly consisted of previous songs adapted for use as a score, it still worked. Four years later, Martin Scorsese hired Gabriel to score The Last Temptation of Christ. If he werent so busy with other projects, I suspect he might have done a few more soundtracks, but filmmakers do love to use his songs: imdb/name/nm0300272/?ref_=nv_sr_1 Another debut, which premiered at the New York and Toronto Film Festivals in 1984 but didnt get wider distribution until January of 85, is the first feature from the Coen Brothers, Blood Simple. It was also the debut film for Frances McDormand (who married Joel Coen on April 1st, no foolin) and composer Carter Burwell, who would continue to work with the Coens on all their other films except Inside Llewyn Davis, but only because that film didnt have a proper score. I found an interesting quote from Burwell about working with the Coens in a biography about them written by Ronald Bergan*, Going into it, I wasnt sure what it was going to be like. I thought they were going to be breathing down my neck, but it was quite the opposite. They were very supportive. They let me do what I wanted to do. I didnt get a lot of specific instructions from them. They told me what they liked and what they didnt like, but they werent specific about what a piece of music should do. One thing they did say with some sanctions, though, was if they felt it was getting too dark, they would say, Its got to be fun; its got to be fast! If it got to be too much fun, they would say, Theres got to be a dark side. *januarymagazine/biography/coenbrothers.html As you can see from Burwells IMDb page, he is getting calls from a lot of filmmakers these days: imdb/name/nm0001980/?ref_=nv_sr_1 youtube/watch?v=Wr8koRRce_Y
