Time to Celebrate 2014 with some Highlights of the WHS Mariachi Program! Mr. Rivera Receives NFL Seattle Seahawks Hispanic Heritage Award Here is the Video:) WENATCHEE — Ramon Rivera was presented the NFL Seattle Seahawks Hispanic Heritage Award at an assembly at Wenatchee High School on Friday. Rivera is the director of the Mariachi Music Program in Wenatchee School District. Seahawks representative Armando Mejia, accompanied by two Seagals, presented the award to Rivera. Mejia said more than half the nominations they received for this award were for Rivera. Upon accepting the award, a surprised Rivera teared up. “I may have to go cry for two hours after this,” he said. The award recognizes the contributions of Hispanic leaders in each NFL market, and Ramon was selected for the Seattle Seahawks. As part of the recognition, Ramon will select an organization that serves the local Hispanic community to receive a $2,000 donation. The National Football League and its teams, and the Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. The Hispanic Heritage Awards were created by the White House to honor notable Latinos who have distinguished themselves in various fields and made an impact on America and globally. The awards are considered the highest honor by Hispanics for Hispanics in America and serve to kick off HHF’s year-round leadership programs, which are focused on youth leadership to meet America’s priorities. Rivera is also a Washington State Jefferson Award winner — regarded as the Nobel Prize for public service. He’s won a human civil rights award in Wenatchee. Rivera and the Mariachi program received the KCTS Golden Apple Award. They’ve been featured on FOX and ABC Network and internationally on Univision. Mariachi Huenachi has earned a reputation as the best high school mariachi in the state of Washington, performing annually at more than 20 events and festivals in and out of state, including events at the state Capitol at the invitation of the governor, and at Seattle Sounders games. The group has also shared the stage with Mexican icons, Los Tigres Del Norte and has opened for international names such as Mariachi Vargas, Joan Sebastian, Gloria Trevi, and comedian George Lopez. Terri Fink is the Wenatchee School District’s communication officer.
