Timmins Sewer Fire 1986 In 1986, an estimated 4000 people were evacuated after a gas leak into city sewers led to five homes exploding. Fumes from a gasoline spill into municipal sewers triggered explosions and fires that set fire to 10 houses and forced the evacuation of about 4,000 people. Over 1,000 gallons of gasoline spilled when a railway tank car was being unloaded at an Imperial Oil Ltd. facility. About 250 gallons of gasoline ran down storm drains into the sewer system before the leak was plugged. Fumes seeping into basements were touched off by pilot lights in natural gas furnaces. The first explosion occurred at about 9 a.m. They reported eight major house fires and said two homes were destroyed. About 200 firefighters doused the blazes in the mainly residential south side of the city. Several people were injured although none were hurt seriously. About 4,000 people were evacuated because of the possibility of more explosions and went to the homes of relatives or the McIntyre Community Center. https://youtube/watch?v=Mqqnfrjw348
