Tiny but Cheerful Update on the Health of the Two Riverside 61 Senior Shelties here at Sheltie Rescue Alternative: Both Gainsborough and Merle Oberon have tested negative for tick-borne diseases! Yippee! I deemed it important to do tick panels for both. Sometimes I just put a dog on Doxycycline without even testing for tick-borne diseases, as thats cheaper...but in this case, the dogs were both already on several meds that can upset their GI tract so I really didnt want to use more than needed, or the wrong med. This is WONDERFUL news. I am hoping it means they wont have to stay on Doxy for as long as Dr. Sheridan and I initially discussed (as the tick-borne disease protocol is something like six weeks of Doxy). Well see. Its possible the vet will think its still important to continue Doxy for several weeks for respiratory issues (Gainesborough arrived here last week with pneumonia, whereas Merle arrived with kennel cough). Ill discuss it with him tomorrow. BTW, Merle Oberon has a mammary tumor. The aspirate came back (annoyingly) as inconclusive so well have to take it off with good margins. She also needs a dental and a spay, so lots of challenges ahead. They are both taking Hydrocodone for cough. With this drug, neither has coughed at all in the past two days. Ive even been able to reduce their dose, down from 3 times daily to 2 times daily. (He gets full tablet, she gets half tablet.) So progress is happening. LOL ONWARDS! Gainesborough on left, Merle Oberon on right.
