Tip of the Week! Local public schools are now taking kindergarten registration! Here are a few tips to make registration a snap and the transition smooth. Be prepared! Bring an original birth certificate and record of up to date immunizations. You have to show proof of residency so also bring a recent utility bill and a lease agreement or property tax statement. (Theyll make copies of these) Have phone numbers and addresses for emergency contacts handy. They will request one out of state contact. Ask questions! Is there an orientation or social prior to school starting? Is there an assessment that my child has to go thru? Do they need a form filled out by a preschool teacher? What are the school hours and do they have after-school care? If not, what do they recommend for working families? Can I request a teacher? Classmates? If so, how? Practice! Ask to visit the classroom. Spend time on the playground and help your child locate the nearest bathroom. Take pictures of the environment and have them available for reference. Read books about Kindergarten and tell them stories of when you went. Keep calm and carry on! Let your child be nervous and excited. And while you can be all of those things too; cry and call your friends and facebook after they have gone off onto their new adventure with your confidence.
