Tip of the Week: Using the knees can be a very effective self defense technique. Knees are more versatile than just the usual knee to the groin approach. Knees can be used to strike the inner or outer thigh, the face or head when the attacker is bent over, and to defend against kicks. The most helpful aspect of using the knees is that they can be used very quickly, even as a reflex action, can be very powerful, and allow the defender to be better able to keep his or her balance. Moreover, the knee, when flexed, hardens like a tight fist or a bent elbow, and so delivers a pointed attack, which can be extremely painful against larger muscle groups, and debilitating against the joints. Knees are best used in close range defense, and only when the situation has brought you that close. Getting close just so that you can use knees, however, can be risky. They are not ordinarily your first line of defense.
