Tip of the day: Know the difference between lactic acid caused fatigue post workout and DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). All too often I hear people the day after their workout saying This lactic acid build up in my muscles is making me so sore! That is not lactic acid. Lactic acid, accompanied by hydrogen ions and a lack of blood flow to the area due to inflammation are present for up to an hour in the muscles after a strenuous workout. DOMS is what you feel the next 12-48 hours. The cause of DOMS isnt proven, but there are a few hypotheses including the Connective Tissue Damage hypothesis, Skeletal Muscle Damage hypothesis and Spasm hypothesis which all have to do with different waste products being built up in the muscles. Stretching post workout can help you ease this through the removal of some of these waste products.
