Tip of the week New Dog settling in On arriving home, take your dog to the garden or intended exercise area and allow him to relieve himself. After you are sure he has done this congratulate him so he understands this is an acceptable place to go to the toilet. Think carefully about the implications of taking time off to spend with your dog when you first bring him home. Often dogs are confused after a period of fulltime attention when their owner goes back to their usual routine. Try using a stair gate to get your new dog used to being alone in a room. Gradually build up the time you leave him alone in the room and ensure he has a toy or chew to play with to keep him occupied. Teaching your dog to be comfortable alone will allow him to relax when you leave the house. Be aware that a dog will often be on its best behaviour during the first two weeks at its new home. After this time it may demonstrate out of character behaviour in a bid to learn how strict its boundaries are. Your dog will feel happier if you set boundaries and ground rules which the whole family sticks to. Never use punishment to overcome problems with your dog as this will cause resentment and will break down the good relationship you are building with him. Tip Stay with your dog when he goes to the toilet. This is the only way to ensure that he has urinated and to reward him at the same time. Try to keep to boundaries and ground rules, your dog will feel much happier if he knows exactly what is expected of him.
