Tip: recording your vocals. A few tips when your recording your vocals. First make sure your levels are good, a good volume level is about 70% of your volume. Make sure it,s not peaking into the red and remember your proximity effect. Now most hip-hop verse are usually 16 bars and will usually be about 40 seconds long. And when you recording your verse, make sure you,ve practise it well and don,t be afraid to delete the vocals if you know you can do it better, the better you deliver it, the better the end result will be. Some mc,s will record their verse from start to finish, the whole 16 bars but i know a lot of mc,s that break their verse into two parts (2 8bars) or into 4 parts (4 4bars) and even into 8 parts (8 2bars). But keep in mind if you do that you may struggle to reproduce it live and it can be a bit tougher to mix down, as your recording more parts. When i record (keep in mind a lot of producers record differently), i record 3 16 bar verses of the same verse but seperate recordings layed on top of each other, i use the best one as my main recording and put the other two at lower volume levels. So the main might be -1 volume, the second -7 volume and the other at -11 volume. The reason i do this is to give it more body and a fuller sound. But if you do this you have to make sure your verse recordings are on point, because it your words don,t match up, you,ll hear it through out the verse. Next i,ll do my backings, which is basicly selecting words in your verse you want to back up to lift the verse more. The way i do this is record the backsing twice, then pan one left (about 50-75%) and the other one to the right and lower the volume of both to about -11. Panning them will give your backing more of a chance to be heard with out over taking the verse as well as lowering the volume. And few other things is as add a little bit of top end to your recordings as when you record you always lose a bit of top end and it will give you a crisper sound but not to much so you end up sounding like i snake, with all your sssss sssssounding like thissss. Another thing is with layering vocals, never just copy a verse you,ve recorded and copy it and layer it,all that will do is double the volume. And when you playing with your volumes and panning, then your "mixing", play around and see what works best, your ears are your main instrument as a mixer/producer so what ever is pleasing to the ears is the best way to indicate your doing it well. (Anyone feel free to add any advise you think is relavant or if you think my tips can be improved on). And i hope it,s not to confusing to read..
