Despite their growing interest in romantic relationships, one of the most significant tasks of middle childhood is for your tween/teen to identify with their same gendered peer group. Acceptance from their peers is an important contributor to their sense of self and the development of their identity. While having a romantic relationship may seem important to them, it is not nearly as important as having friends and those with whom they can share interests, experiences, and secrets.
