Tips on care of your flooring, hardwoods and tile..... Its a necessary nuisance of every Northern winter: the chloride compounds we spread on sidewalks and driveways to keep ice at bay. Ice melts keep us safe by lowering the freezing point of water. And their gritty texture increases walkers foot traction. But many compounds contain corrosive substances. When tracked inside, these can be harmful to your floors. (Theyre also dangerous when ingested by pets.) While you cant make your floors rock salt-proof, the best thing you can do to protect yourself is to prevent particles from coming indoors in the first place. Place a large mat outside the entrance to your home where visitors can brush off their shoes. Better yet, request that shoes be removed upon entry. If crystals make their way inside, take action quickly. Use a terrycloth towel or a soft mop to gently lift particles up and away. Dont sweep - this could damage the finish of hardwoods and tile. If salt crystals have already dried on your floor, try a solution of 1 part water to 1 part vinegar. Let the mixture sit for 2 to 3 minutes, then gently mop. With these tips, youll be dreaming of a white Christmas, not dreading it! Helpful Tips from Your Friends at W.E. Bilbrey General Contractors.
