Title - Feathers of the Phoenix Inspiration - Every year I doubt myself, I get sick and burnt out, but every year I hold myself up, I rise again and I create just like the phoenix out of the asses. I thought the gold was appropriate symbolism for resurrection and new life from the flames. Materials - Coat Hanger - Taxidermy Plastic - Red and Gold Spray Paint - Heat Gun - Scissors - Glue (very tacky and fast drying) - 1m ruler Method - I shaped the coat hanger into a circle and inserted another as a cross beam running the diameter of the circle. - I then cut out 2 circles and 2 cross beam pieces 1.5cm thick out of the taxidermy plastic. - I measured out 0.5cm strips of the plastic and cut them 50cm long - I wove the plastic strips to form the lower half of the hat and then applied heat to bond the plastic using the head gun. - I drew out my feather shapes and then cut them out. Using the head gun i warmed up the plastic till it was malubale and with a butter knife I created the veining to look like a feather. After the plastic cooled I then cut into the feather to fringe it a little moulding it a second time with my fingers and a little heat to give the feathers shape. - Firstly I lay down one of my plastic circles, then the woven netting i had made then the hanger then my last piece of doughnut like plastic and heated the whole thing, trimming off and shaping my circle. - I arranged and attached the feathers with a bit of glue. - The mohawk band is another hanger bent into shape and scrap pieces of the plastic melted onto it and moulded around the wire to stiffen it. - The piece was sprayed with red and then gold to give it the rich tone. - I then wore it with pride and got to come face to face with the Melbourne Cup YAY - The method of attachment is the band and my hair pulls though either in a ponytail or bun chucking in a bobby pin or two and it sits perfectly.
