Tl;dr— Watch me mostly naked. Here it is, my one-off modern fusion performance of Radioactive. It was really difficult for me to perform this, much less in public. When I choreographed the first part, it was just as an exercise for my class in fusing belly dance with western music, with various ratios of belly dance:other dance styles. Then, as the year went on and I was finishing it, I realized it became sort of a physical manifestation of my most recent struggles in life, both related to dance and not. It started as nothing, and turned into something. This is also the first time Ive performed anything where the ratio of belly dance:other dance has been so off balance. I generally do about 80% belly dance:20% other styles, but this time I think it was reversed. As someone trained in other dance styles, I felt like it was time to honor them a little more predominantly in a piece, than just as accents. Another less important point, is this is the first time performing so nearly naked at a belly dance-centric event. Ive been much less clothed at burlesque performances and whatnot, but Ive always tried to keep my costuming semi-modest with the belly dance crowd. But the thing Ive learned after years of making my own costumes, is I just dont like wearing pants. I dont mind them occasionally, but I like the freedom of my legs, and being bare. It was drilled into me for a long time that I should perform as modestly as possible, a time where I only wore things slit up to the knee, covered myself with a choli and vest, and hoped to some deity that my tattoo didnt show (you know which one). So this performance, along with the vulnerable emotional side, was also an opportunity I took to try belly dancing in booty shorts. And I loved it. In conclusion, I may not be as skilled in other dance styles as I am with belly dance, but I love them just as much. I want to start incorporating it more, to expand my performance vocabulary and keep evolving. Youre awesome.
