To Fellow Members of Crofton First, For those of you that plan to vote tomorrow in Maryland’s Gubernatorial Primary, no matter who you decide to ultimately vote for, Crofton First would like you to be aware that one of the candidates for Governor could have a very direct impact on the fate of the former Walmart site. The Republican candidate Larry Hogan is the same individual that is the Founder and President of the Hogan Companies a commercial real estate brokerage firm and land holding company. It is the same firm that currently owns the former Walmart site. Since we had learned of the sale and transfer of the land from its prior owner, on at least three occasions, Crofton First has attempted to reach out to the Hogan Companies to discuss our concerns about the land and possibly working with them on finding honest alternatives that addressed both their needs for a profitable use and the community’s need for minimal impact on the environment and traffic. We have yet to receive a reply. Additionally, in late 2013, we had learned of County Council bill 81-13 which would have allowed for intense residential density in C2 zoned properties throughout the county that was specifically targeted for that site. It was rumored, and I stress the acknowledgement that it was only a “rumor, that the Hogan Companies had lobbied hard behind the scenes for this bill and helped to put it in for consideration before the council. However, with both your help and support from the Growth Action Network, we were able to defeat the bill. With that in perspective, it is hard to envision a positive outcome for the land if someone with the influence of a high state office has personal gains to be made from the development of the land. We’ve been pretty quiet this election year but we felt that this had too much of a direct impact on our original and core mission. Again, we just ask that you take this in consideration before voting whoever you wish to choose. Thank you, -Crofton First
