The official website includes a fascinating history of the Order in Portugal, originating in 1264 with a leper hospital supported by Queen D. Mafalda of Savoia and members of the Order in Marco de Canaveses. In 2013, the headquarters of the Grand Priory of Portugal returned to Marco de Canaveses in an 18th century building next to the Douro River with a private chapel. In 2014, the Order in Portugal celebrates 750 years, and the Grand Priory of Portugal invites all members to come to Guimarães for a very special Vigil and Investiture with the Grand Master of the Order in attendance.
