To add to the Ebola discussion we had at our meeting tonight, heres the recent update. One of the UAEM members sent these comments while sharing this article: New modeling estimates predict 20 thousand deaths by mid-Oct at current infection rates. This particular Ebola strain has a longer incubation time making it difficult to catch and a very large number of West African health workers - already in short supply - have died of the disease. The new-fangled symbolic but somewhat trivial contribution by the U.S. is not going to change the course of the epidemic as far as we can tell. As Ebola spreads to neighboring countries - and at its present pace it absolutely will - countries with precarious governance and health infrastructure are at risk for re-emerging civil unrest. Shaky economies will be set back years.
